Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love: Daily Meditations to Help You through the Grieving Process is an essential guide for the grieving process. The authors’ stated purpose is to help people “to the other side of grief,” and through 70 different short meditations on the grieving process, they do just that. These meditations provide comfort and information on a range of issues we face when we are grieving, including what to expect emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. It offers gentle and specific help for the things that might surprise us as we encounter others during our grieving process, question God’s role in our grief, and move through different stages in our own individual journey through grief. The authors continually offer practical help and hold out hope that this is not the end.
Their motivation to write is the fact that although we all expect to encounter death in our lifetime, we are never really taught how to grieve. In some ways, our expectations and cultural norms may impede our journey through the grieving process. This book, however, offers thoroughly biblical, practical advice for the grieving process.
The authors write, “There is no standard for grieving. Loss affects each of us differently.” This book has short, comforting advice for all kinds of struggles we may face in the grieving process. I first read it years ago to understand what a friend was facing when she was grieving the death of a family member. As I read, I was surprised by how it also comforted me concerning the loss of my own father, which had happened 25 years earlier. There were aspects of my own grief that I worked through for the first time, even from a loss that had happened decades before. Therefore, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from a loss or to people who desire to comfort others who are suffering.
“Compassionate and wise guides Raymond Mitsch and Lynn Brookside shine a light on the road through grief. They can help you endure the anguish and uncertainty; understand the cycles of grief; sort through the emotions of anger, guilt, fear, and depression; and face the God who allowed you to lose the one you love. A series of thoughtful daily devotions, Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love shares wisdom, insight, and comfort that will help you through and beyond your grief.” (Amazon description)
